3 Essential Tips for Going Vegan This Veganuary

by Anda Mtshemla

Whether you’re considering trying a vegan diet for your health, environmental or animal welfare reasons, there is no better time to begin than at the start a new year and decade. But changing your diet and lifestyle can be daunting, so where should you begin? Turns out being going vegan is easier than ever before and I’ve got a few tips to make Veganuary a breeze!

Eat Breakfast!

Like most people, before I went vegan, I had very set ideas of what to eat in the morning: eggs, cereal, bangers, smoothies. None of the foods I listed are vegan but they can all be made vegan pretty easily! There’s a world of vegan egg options, and with products from Fry’s, you can still enjoy your morning porridge, bangers and delicious high-protein smoothies too.

Eat Out!

As someone who truly enjoys cooking and being in the kitchen, even I have nights where I’d prefer to not cook and order in or even head out for a meal. Luckily, South Africa has made such great strides toward veganism and there is a world of new and exciting vegan options available at many mainstream restaurants. Spur Steak Ranches has introduced a plant-based menu, Panarottis also now serves 100% vegan pizza even offering to the option to veganise existing menu items, and the famed Afro’s Chicken Shop also added a vegan-friendly chicken option for all its meat-free customers. Not to mention there are many 100% vegan restaurants such as Lekker Vegan, which takes Fry’s burgers to a new level!

Relax!

Nobody (or at least not anybody I know)! goes vegan in a day. Even I was a vegetarian for eight whole years before I made the decision to go vegan. So, whether you decide to challenge yourself this Veganuary and completely commit to consuming no animal products for the whole of January or whether you go as vegan as is possible for you, you will have achieved the goal of Veganuary which is to try vegan.
